The Delancey station in particular because it’s where I meet local artists for an ongoing portrait series. The MTA in general because I’d travel throughout New York City seeking people alone at peace to photograph them for my interpretation of the ‘Invisible Cities’ Manfrotto project [a collaboration between NYC Salt and Manfrotto]. Her father was not present. He was incarcerated in 1993 for an alleged robbery – one she says he did not commit. She was a month old when he went in. "It has been my whole life,” she says, pictured here with her father’s letters to her over the years.Her father's tentative release has not yet materialized. "It's really discouraging...I can feel it in his voice. He kinda feels ashamed calling me every week without any news." Fueled by a sense of injustice, she aims to use her resources to engage inequality and inaccuracy, believing that trauma is best expressed in art. Her passion project is telling her father's story and the effect it has on her life and their relationship. She hopes to encourage others to be vulnerable with their own stories, facing them head on in order to heal from passed down generational traumas.Stella continues to stay involved with NYC Salt, even presenting at this year's annual Exhibition event. It cares for 57 orphans and a sizable staff, most of which are volunteers without stipend or pay. After years of sending volunteers and donations, National Community Church's A1:8 Missions program wanted better understand and support their long-term partnership with CCC by documenting the realities, challenges, joys, and sacrifices of living in and sustaining an orphanage. Uvira is a city in Sud-Kivu Province located at the north end of Lake Tanganyika. Uvira is also connected to other cities by a lake port called Kalundu, located at the southern end of the city. The auto transportation is a rare occurrence for the orphans, their normal mode being via foot several kilometers to church and back every week. It is often dangerous for the orphans to commute by foot. The orphanage is attempting to provide for itself in more sustainable ways, particularly by growing its own food.
